Wardrobe Essentials For A Plus Size Lady

Fashion devotee or not, there are some things every woman should have in her wardrobe.

  1. Black Pants
A well-fitted pair of black pants is essential for your wardrobe. Apart from the fact that black is considered the magic slimming color, the pants are very versatile. You can dress them up for a formal occasion with a shirt and a suit jacket or dress them down with a t-shirt for a more casual look.
    • Avoid pants with pleats.
    • Pants should be long enough to be worn with two-inch heels but not too long so you can wear them with flats.
    • A medium rise pair is better than a low rise or high-waisted pair.
    • Spandex and stretch pants are a no-no

  2. White Blouse/Shirt
This compliments pretty much everything else in your wardrobe because of its versatility. You can wear it to a business meeting or a date depending on what your pair it with and what accessories you use. Just make sure the white stays white and doesn’t turn to grey, and skip the ruffles. For summer, a white t shirt or vest is the perfect alternative.

  3. Well Fitted Jeans

What would a wardrobe be without jeans and you need to find a pair that flatters your curves.
    • Avoid stretch jeans.
    • Boot cuts usually look great.
    • A medium rise pair is better than a low rise or high-waisted pair.
    • Tapered cuts should be avoided.
    • Medium and dark wash jeans look better.

  4. Suit Jacket
A suit jacket is a must for a career woman and if it’s not fitted, turn it over to the fashion police…yesterday! The jacket should ideally be one that matches your dress pants (black, brown, navy, gray). It is not meant to hide your curves but so don’t hide behind a baggy jacket…get one that is fitted to your figure.

  5. A Dress
There’s nothing more feminine than a dress. I was going to say a black dress but figured you might get bored with the monotony of colors in your wardrobe. A black dress is definitely more versatile but there’s nothing wrong with a little color right. So pick one in a color that flatters you. The style and length are all dependent on what you prefer and are comfortable in. Just remember, it doesn’t hurt to be a little flirty.

  6. Good Underwear
We all have undewear but the difference between underwear and good underwear is how it makes you feel. Okay, not just how it makes you feel…but how it makes you look too. The best dress or the world’s most gorgeous pair of pants can look a million times better with the right underwear.

  7. Black Shoes
Black goes with everything and a smartly chosen pair can be worn to work and for a night out on the town. Buy the best you can afford because trust me, the better the shoes, the better your feet will feel in them.
    • Buy the most comfortable pair possible.
    • Platform or block heels are better than stilettos for the plus size body.
    • If you’re buying boots, go for a 3/4th length so you can wear them with skirts, dresses and pants.

Not all of us can be fashionistas but at least if we get the basics right, we can survive the seasonal changes in fashion and still come out looking good.

I have everything except 1, 4, and 5...But I don't work in a job where I need to dress in "corporate" clothes, lucky for me. I wear my jeans all the time, and my white shirt has served me for job interviews as well as romantic dinners with my boyfriend and girls nights out! And I wholeheartedly agree with number 6 - good underwear is worth the extra cost. It's not only more comfortable, it looks better and makes you feel better and more attractive too!

I don't own a pair of jeans, I can never find a pair to fit that are also comfortable and don't cut my belly in half. I don't work a corporate job either, so though I have a suit jacket its gathering dust and I have not ever worn it more than twice in ten years. And I rarely if ever wear a dress. The Underwear and the black pants and black shoes are all musts though.
